Description
Kolomenskoye was first mentioned in written sources of the 14th century, namely in the Testaments of Moscow Grand Prince Ivan Kalita (dated 1336 and 1339). The unique landscape of Kolomenskoye bears traces of many generational lives and activities. Beginning from the 15th century, Kolomenskoye was a summer country residence of Moscow rulers. In the 16th and the 17th century, a unique architectural ensemble of Kolomenskoye was imbued with the idea of the czars’ residence of great artistic and historical value. The most crucial sight will be the Church of the Ascension which is included in the list of monuments of the world heritage of UNESCO. In 1539, the Ascension Church was built on the grounds of the Kolomeskoye village to mark the birth of one of Russia’s most famous czars – Ivan the Terrible. There are also three more architectural monuments which are located close to the church: the bell tower of St. George (16th century), water tower (17 century) and the hunting pavilion (19 century). In the former village of Dyakovo, now part of Kolomenskoye, there will be one more marvelous 16th century architectural sites – the Church of Beheading of St. John the Forerunner.Includes
