When possible, tickets for long distance trains should be purchased in advance from a respected travel agent or from the long-distance ticket windows in the stations themselves. Tickets for suburban trains can also be bought from machines in and around the ticket halls, which can be handy for non-Russian speakers.

Moscow Metro’s "Koltsevaya," or circleline connects the majority of the railway stations with the exception of Rizhskiy and Savyolovskiy, which are both situated just one stop north of it on their respective metro lines. From all the stations you can easily catch the metro, which will connect you to any one of the other main stations should you require it. Leningradskiy, Kazanskiy and Yaroslavskiy are all located on Komsomolskaya Square, known as the "square of 3 stations".

Russian trains vary greatly in speed and comfort. There are several different ticket classes on long distance trains, ranging from the basic "platzkartniy" class, right up to "luxe". There are now several high-speed trains running between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, which take less than four hours to reach Russia’s second city. You can check timetables and view prices for each ticket type on the Russian railway website.

Traveling by train is still very popular in Russia and provides visitors with a true insight into everyday Russian life, as well as the chance to enjoy the stunning scenery and to witness the true expanse of this fascinating country.

All aboard!
